about us

Social insects (bees, wasps, ants and termites) are ideal model systems for investigating fundamental biological questions. In recent decades, they have therefore increasingly become the object of scientific research, not least because they are found almost everywhere and play a decisive role in most terrestrial ecosystems.

Scientists interested in social insects have joined forces in the International Union for the Study of Social Insects (IUSSI). The IUSSI was founded in 1951 during the International Entomology Congress in Amsterdam and today consists of around 15 regional or national sections. It publishes an internationally recognized quarterly journal, Insectes Sociaux, and organizes an international conference every four years.

The individual sections also organize national or regional meetings.
The German-speaking section of IUSSI is one of the largest regional sections. In the fall of 2007, it changed its name to “Central European Section” and thus opened up to potential members from other European countries (for those interested in the statutes of the CE IUSSI click here)
